Update on Marissa (from Sean)

I wanted to post an update on Marissa. As you probably know from following Marissa's previous posts, the Doxil was not working well as indicated by her CA125 and a CT scan at the beginning of the year, so she switched in January to a chemo drug that she had previously had back in 2006 called Taxol. Instead of receiving it in high doses like she did in 2006, she instead received it weekly in a lower dose (it attacks the cancer in a different way when dosed in lower). We hoped that this was working but unfortunately we learned two weeks ago that it was most likely not working as the cancer marker, CA125, had risen 1700 points while on Taxol. The doctor wanted to go through with two more weeks of Taxol to see if the CA125 showed any further response. We got our answer last week though because Marissa unfortunately developed a partial bowel obstruction from tumors that caused vomiting and she could not eat. As a result she was admitted to the hospital this past Friday thru Monday for treatment for dehydration, as well as for observation, and they did not allow her to eat anything to rest the bowel.

She arrived home from the hospital Monday evening and was allowed to start a "soft food" diet. Things seemed to be going well until Tuesday evening when she once again vomited, so we cut back to a clear diet to let things try to calm down again. Since then she has been feeling better and is back on a soft diet again as of today, so we hope that the partial bowel obstructions have started to let up.

While in the hospital they ran another CT scan and it did indicate that the cancer has progressed, so instead of doing more Taxol, we made the decision today in our visit with Dr. Yamada to switch to a different chemo drug that she has not had had before called Gemcitabine (trade name is Gemzar if you are interested). She will receive this two weeks on and two weeks off, and it will take about a month to determine if it has any effect.

As for clinical trials, this is still on the table but not available now, nor is it a good time to go there at the moment. We did find a couple open PARP slots over the past few weeks but none of them are available to Marissa due to toxicity given the number of previous regimens she has been through. She still is on the waiting list for a PARP trial at University of Wisconsin, but a slot will not open up until May or June at the earliest. None of these are an option at the moment anyway because of the partial bowel obstruction. The PARP trials are oral and until the bowel obstruction is resolved, she can't be on oral meds.

That is the current status to date. Either Marissa or I will try to update the blog more often so you are kept in the loop on Marissa's status.

Take care,
Sean

  • Thanks for the update, but of course... I wish you didn't have to write it. Alicia and I are thinking of you two and sending as many positive thoughts and prayers your way. I know I say this every time we talk, but if there is anything we can do just holler. -Eric and Alicia

  • Sean, I have been reading Marissa's Blog for a few months, finding it during my nightly OC searches, glad to hear she is home and feeling better. My wife has a similar story, at time identical, my wife Susie (50) has been fighting OC since 6/08, been on several chemo regimens (taxol, gemzar, doxil) and is currently off chemo awaiting start of the same PARP trial but in the Florida location (Moffit Cancer center), Susie has also been recently diagnosed with a partial bowel obstruction probably from adhesions formed on the bowel from her hysterectomy and previous radiation (from another cancer - she has 3 primary cancers)or maybe from Avastin. When Marissa is feeling better I would love to have them connect, my wife is depressed right now cause her CA125 has quadrupled and is off all chemo/drugs until she starts the trial...so the cancer continues to grow and spread. My wife may be able to add her insight as she is a Nurse Practitioner and although she is a lousy, stubborn patient, she is a very good Nurse Practitioner. Susie is on a low fiber diet right now, Miralax and Aloe are her friends, she fills up fast and is uncomfortable most of the time, probably similar to what Marissa is going through.

  • Sean, sorry about that my first comment on a blog, my name is Jerry. A bit more history - Back in 10/07 Susie's life changed when within 7 months she was diagnosed with 3 primary cancers - 1st Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in remission, 2nd - Thyroid Cancer in remission, and finally OC. It is hereditary, her sister passed away from it 10 yrs ago. Susie has been in remission a couple of times from OC, keeps coming back. Susie had half of her bowel removed during hysterectomy and 5 weeks of radiation to destroy the Lymphoma - maybe what caused the partial obstruction, though she has a long history of lower GI problems. Hopefully she can tolerate the Parp Inhibitor, it may be her last chance....please be careful with the taxol, Marissa should start a vitamin regimen of B-1, B-6, & B-12 and an amino acid called L-Glutamine (powder form - Glutasolve, 15g, 3x/day, alphalipoc acid, etc. Susie developed horrible foot neuropathies from the taxol that were supposed to be temporary. She was told about the Vitamin regimen too late, though she still takes them - suggest going to Dana Farber site and search for Neuropathy Nutrients - there is a list, I wish we knew about this earlier - my wife has severe foot pain, numbness all the time with medications - the taxol killed the foot nerve endings - no cure. Best wishes to both of you.
    Jerry

  • oops, read your post again, Susie was on Gemzar, Carboplatinum, and Avastin for 6 cycles...watch blood counts carefully, expect serious drops in Platelets and H/H, Susie had numerous blood transfusions. Susie continued on a maintenance dose of Avastin for several months...its been a long day. Jerry

  • Jerry - This is Marissa's husband Sean. I am very sorry to hear about your wife's struggles with this horrible disease. I would like to connect offline if possible. My email address is hillssk@hotmail.com. Thanks, and best of luck to your wife. She sounds much like Marissa - a fighter.
